ICF Insulated Concrete Forms

What is Insulated Concrete Forming (ICF)? Insulating Concrete Forms are energy-efficient reinforced-concrete walls that are dry-stacked and filled with concrete, similar to Lego pieces. The blocks, or forms, are piled to form exterior and interior walls, then reinforcing steel or rebar is inserted into the openings, and finally, concrete is pumped in to form the walls' structural element.

To aid in the adoption of ICF building, the Cement Association of Canada has produced standardized ICF training modules. Two of their primary goals are:

  • To promote a better knowledge and awareness of ICF construction as a viable building choice, hence increasing its acceptance in both the residential and non-residential markets.
  • To provide an industry standard for mandatory ICF training, ensuring that the building crew has the necessary skills to achieve high-quality construction, ICF pool.
  • In both the residential and non-residential industries, ICF building is quickly gaining favor.


Several materials can be used to construct an insulated concrete form, including:

Wood fibers bound with cement (recycled waste wood and cement) (ii) Cement-bonded polystyrene beads (iii) Expanded polystyrene beads


Wood concrete forms, which are formed of cement-bonded wood fiber material and solely employ natural components, are one of the best ICFs. A higher functioning ICF wall system is achieved by combining recovered waste wood and cement. When shopping for an insulated concrete form, seek an ecologically friendly one, produced from recycled materials, does not contain or emit any harmful ingredients, and is completely recyclable. Additionally, insulated concrete forms that do not include plastic, foams, or polystyrene are better for the environment than those that do.


The advantages of ICF building over typical wood frame construction are numerous.


  • Stability and Convenience The walls and floors of an ICF structure are one continuous surface. This will help keep insects out while also removing allergies, dust, mold, and other irritants. Additionally, the insulated shapes are almost soundproof, preventing unwanted noises and distractions.
  • Energy Efficiency Because you're using insulated concrete forms, your walls are already more insulated than a wood-frame structure. The ICFs will keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and you may save up to 80% on heating and cooling bills.
  • Structural Integrity A structure made of insulated concrete forms can withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour and withstand fire for up to 3.5 hours. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and a broad range of weather conditions have been known to hit ICF houses from coast to coast. Furthermore, because the concrete does not decompose when wet, maintenance and repairs are low.
  • Green Construction From the raw materials through the installation, ICFs are environmentally friendly. ICFs with no CFCs, HCFCs, or formaldehyde used in the production process and manufactured from recycled material are available, depending on the product. Furthermore, all of the installation debris, including the insulated forms, is recyclable.
